One Size Does Not Fit All: Why Custom Matters
For the majority of patients dealing with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, or diabetic foot complications, over-the-counter insoles are a compromise that addresses none of the specific structural factors driving their pain. Custom molded orthotics are prescription medical devices engineered to the precise contours of your individual foot.
The Custom Orthotic Appointment: What Happens
A custom orthotic appointment at Dr. Katz's practice begins with a thorough history and biomechanical examination. The foot impression is captured through a 3D digital scan or foam box casting and transmitted to a specialized fabrication laboratory where the device is manufactured to exact specifications.
Device Types and Materials
- Functional orthotics: Rigid or semi-rigid polypropylene shell. Used for overpronation, plantar fasciitis, and sport-related biomechanical correction.
- Accommodative orthotics: Softer devices made from EVA foam or viscoelastic materials. Used for diabetic feet, arthritic conditions, and patients requiring pressure redistribution.
- Hybrid orthotics: Combine a firm shell for control with a cushioned top cover for comfort.
Many insurance plans cover custom orthotics when medically necessary. Learn more about all orthotic options, and schedule a biomechanical evaluation with Dr. Katz.
