What is Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that uses focused acoustic energy (sound waves) to break up damaged, calcified tissue and stimulate the body's natural healing response. It triggers new blood vessel formation and jump-starts cellular repair in areas that have become chronically inflamed and resistant to healing.

At Katz Regenerative Foot & Ankle, Dr. Katz uses ESWT as a first-line regenerative treatment for patients who have tried rest, stretching, orthotics, or cortisone injections without lasting relief.

Conditions We Treat with ESWT

What to Expect

A typical ESWT session at our Coral Gables office takes about 25 minutes. Dr. Katz applies ultrasound gel to the treatment area, positions the shockwave device against your skin, and delivers precise acoustic pulses to the target tissue. An optional local anesthetic is available for sensitive patients. Most patients feel little or no pain 1–3 weeks after treatment as healing begins.

Results are typically felt within 4–8 weeks. One session is often sufficient, though some conditions benefit from two to three treatments spaced several weeks apart.
